Community Service
Community service is an integral part of daily life at SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center. It is said that "when you lose yourself in the service of others you find yourself." In giving back, students at SunHawk build relationships with fellow students and members of the community, feel a sense of belonging to a cause greater than themselves, and develop a spiritual connection. By being aware of and giving attention to the needs and suffering of those around them, students gain empathy which can heal the spirit, freeing them from the chains of addictive thoughts and behaviors.
Prior to graduation, SunHawk students complete a "serenity project," a significant community service project that leaves a positive mark on SunHawk and the surrounding community. In the past, students have painted inspirational scenes in their rooms, gone caroling at a local nursing home, and volunteered time at an animal shelter or state park clean-up.
