SunHawk Adolescent Residential Living

Residential Living

Activities

Between classes and therapy sessions, students enjoy time for physical fitness, experiential activities, and personal time. In addition to on-campus ropes course initiatives, tai chi, yoga, music, and martial arts classes, and various games and activities, students can participate in off-campus trips to the local recreation center, theaters, college sporting events, bowling, movies, and more.

SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center is set in the city of St. George, Utah, a region known for its stunning national and state parks. Once a month, students may join in on trips to nearby Zion National Park or local state parks for hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and overnight camping trips.

Five-Tiered Level System

Positive reinforcement is a strong catalyst for change at SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center. Using a five-tiered level system, students receive privileges like off-campus trips and extended family interactions for demonstrated understanding of the 12 Steps and appropriate adolescent behavior that contributes to SunHawk's positive peer culture.

In order to advance to the next level, students must complete various recovery-related assignments and demonstrate a certain level of commitment to change. For example, students at Level One complete a personal autobiography and begin working the 12 Steps. At Level Five, students complete a "serenity project," or community service project, that leaves a positive mark on SunHawk and the surrounding community. In the past, students have painted inspirational scenes in their rooms, gone caroling at a local nursing home, and volunteered time at an animal shelter or state park clean-up.
