Why Use a 12 Step Model?
SunHawk's adolescent substance abuse treatment program is based on the philosophy of the Twelve Steps program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Using a 12 Step model doesn't mean that we recreate AA or NA within our treatment center. Rather, we take the principles embodied within the 12 Steps and use them to build a framework for recovery. The steps as they are laid out provide a wonderful and clear path for anyone struggling with addictive behaviors, thought processes, and lifestyles to move themselves into a healthier and more fulfilling life.
We use the 12 Step model for two important reasons. First, AA and NA provide a worldwide support system teens can access for the rest of their lives. Started in 1935, AA is an international organization dedicated to helping the suffering alcoholic or addict into recovery by providing a system of common language and shared experiences and support. With more than 115,000 groups worldwide and an estimated membership in the U.S. and Canada of about 1.5 million, AA is one of the largest and most accessible support systems in the world.
In the past decade, we have seen a tremendous growth in the size and number of AA and NA youth groups around the country. These groups, focused primarily on teenagers trying to stay in recovery, have offered a haven for those struggling to find their place in society. Group meetings can be found just about anywhere in the country, any time of the day, seven days a week.
By using a 12 Step approach, our students learn the language and cultures of AA and NA. Once teens feel comfortable interacting in the group setting, they are more likely to access this incredible support system after they leave the safety and structure of our long-term drug rehab program.
The second reason is the safe and natural way the 12 Steps introduce spirituality into the recovery process. At a time when it can be confusing and even uncomfortable to deal with issues of a spiritual nature, the 12 Steps embrace the concept of a higher power as a key to recovery. Experience shows that those who are able to build a spiritual connection are in a better position to achieve lasting sobriety.
SunHawk uses the practical application of the concept of service to help students discover and embrace spiritual connections. It is said that "when you lose yourself in the service of others you find yourself." So often we are at our very worst when our focus in life is on ourselves. By being aware of and giving attention to the needs and suffering of those around us, we gain empathy which can heal our spirit, freeing us from the chains of addictive thoughts and behaviors.
