Treating Adolescent Substance Abuse

Philosophy Statement

At SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center, we believe that integrated recovery, clinical, and academic services provide students with the tools to improve their lives and their relationships with their families.

Our treatment philosophy is established upon our belief in the following principles and concepts:

Personalized Care: We believe in an integrated treatment team approach, with clinical staff and residential staff working together to assess each student's particular needs, create individualized treatment plans, and make decisions regarding each student's progress and goals.

Productive Relationships: Because adolescents tend to be heavily influenced by the opinions and experiences of their peers, we have found group therapy to be particularly effective for teens in recovery.

Positive Reinforcement: We believe that positive reinforcement is a strong catalyst for change. Using a five-tiered level system, students earn privileges for demonstrated understanding of the 12 Steps and appropriate behavior that contributes to SunHawk's positive peer culture.

Clinical Excellence: Our clinical staff includes a clinical director, a psychiatrist, licensed substance abuse counselors, master's level therapists, a registered nurse, and certified nursing assistants. A psychiatrist and pediatrician, who are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, meet with students on campus once a week.

Academic Success: We believe strongly in the need for dynamic academics that engage students and encourage a love for learning. Students work at their own pace in classes that have been specifically designed to meet their unique needs.

Healthy Families: We believe that parents play a critical role in the therapeutic process and we want to help all parents understand what treatment is about and learn how to play an active positive role in their children’s healthy development.

Continued Care: We stand by our work at SunHawk. It is our policy that if a client relapses within one year of completion of the program, he/she may return to SunHawk for a 45-day refresher course at no cost.

Also, as a proud member of CRC Health Group, we embrace CRC’s five core values:

  • Respect – for our students and their families, our employees, and our community
  • Integrity – in our dealings with all those whose lives we touch
  • Accountability – to our students and their families, and to our colleagues
  • Responsibility – for the decisions we make and the actions we take
  • Excellence – in every task we perform
